How important is your choice of ammo vs. your choice of gun? As it turns out, in a self defense situation it can mean the difference between penetration of your intended target or not. An all lead bullet expands quickly and penetration of your target can be prevented by something like thick layers of clothing, possibly having no effect on your assailant. A jacketed hollow point is an excellent round for self defense. It features a lead core with a harder metal exterior (usually copper). The harder metal exterior allows for better penetration and the softer metal (lead) interior expands during impact slowing the round (see image). This can prevent collateral damage beyond your intended target.
